How to Construct a Durable Retaining Wall

Retaining walls have multiple benefits because these walls not only increases the beauty of a home but also protects the land. If you ever visit hilly regions, you will easily realize the importance of constructing these walls. In many sloppy areas, these walls are constructed to stabilize the entire slope from being collapsed.

Homeowners who want to construct a retaining wall around their houses become confused as they don’t realize how to do it. Remember that building this structure is quite easy if you have an adequate idea about calculation, types of pressure, and soil properties and characteristics. Most importantly, they want to know about building a durable retaining wall, which can stand firm for a longer period.

How to Construct a Durable Retaining Wall

Before you start constructing a wall, the first thing that you need to do is – planning and design. Preplanning can release the additional stresses of the individuals. During the planning and designing of the project, make sure that you obtain the necessary items for construction.

Things that are needed for building retaining wall

  • Shovel
  • Concrete blocks
  • Hand tamper or vibrating plate compactor
  • Level measuring tool (2 feet or 4 feet)
  • Hammer
  • Gravel or stones
  • Adhesive material

The process to build a retaining wall

  • Dig the soil and make a trench

This is the first step of this project. To make the wall durable, you should focus on the bottom or base of the structure. Engineers recommend that the base should be 0.6 times higher than the height of the entire wall. There are various types of retaining walls that can be made, but the owners should select them before start working. He should design and calculate the width of the trench carefully. A stronger base means a stronger wall.

  • Compact the trench

Use the vibrating plate compactor or hand tamper to compact the soils in the trench. Many people often neglect this step. If you don’t compact the soil, it will remain loose, and after constructing the wall, it may settle, which will seem bad.

  • Place the stones across the trench

Stones are placed in the trench to improve the drainage. People often use crushed stones because these stones are better to handle, and one can compact them quickly. In addition to this, many people find it too easy to compact the ground after placing the stones. We encourage you to use angular stones because these stones can interlock more efficiently, and the rounded ones often fail to stick to each other.

  • Place the first layer

Now place the first layer and check the level using a level measuring tool. Remember that neglecting the level may be responsible for the irregular shape and size of the wall. Use the hammer to manage the level. Once you set up the first layer, use a brush to sweep above the blocks because it will assist you in using the adhesive materials. After this, place the second layer and check the level once again. Repeat the entire process until you attain the desired height.

To enhance the drainage, use the perforated pipes after the first layer and use stones as the backfilling materials. By following these ways, you can easily build a retaining wall for home improvement.
